Spotlight – Marke2ing

We spoke with Sabine Popp, co-founder of Marke2ing. Sabine and her business partner both came from marketing backgrounds and shared a desire to start their own business. Sabine discusses the challenges they faced and offers some advice to entrepreneurs who are hoping to start and grow their own business.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came about starting your business?

Linsay Duncan, my business partner, and I have done our fair share of marketing in businesses of all sizes and across industries. Both of us have always wanted to start our own business. We met through our marketing director jobs and enjoyed working together on creating business growth through commercially-focused marketing.

Eventually, our career paths brought us to a point where we both wanted to bring professional marketing to growing small to medium-sized businesses. That’s when Marke2ing was born. When business leaders need an experienced marketer to reach their growth objectives we can help.

What products and services does your business offer?

We provide all the marketing expertise and resource a growing SME needs, part-time and on a flexible basis. From generating sales leads to increasing brand awareness, we develop the relevant strategy and execute it for them.

One of our marketing directors looks after each specific customer’s needs, and immerses themselves in their company. This ensures that our SME customers have the marketing support that’s right for them. Our marketing directors can pull in the help of our marketing specialists as well.

Our aim is to make our customers self-sufficient in their marketing so we also offer to recruit and train their own marketers when the time is right.

What does a typical day look like for you?

On a typical day, Linsay and I will focus on work for customers in the morning, have a brief catch up about Marke2ing business matters and in the afternoon look into any pertinent market developments, take care of business development and recruitment of our own marketing directors.

What has been your biggest challenge since starting the business?

Getting through the first two years proved the biggest challenge so far. We didn’t want to believe that they’d be as tough as people tend to say about starting a new business. But we started Marke2ing in 2011, at a time when the repercussions from the credit crunch were still felt considerably. Five years on our focus is on growing our team size to serve more customers.

Asking for help and delegating becomes really important when you don’t have a big organisation around you.

What advice would you give to other business leaders for growing their business?

Be sure to test your proposition, to establish a competitive advantage and to get advice in areas where you’re not an expert. Asking for help and delegating becomes really important when you don’t have a big organisation around you. Overstretching yourself early on can only take you so far, but getting the right support for your own venture can make all the difference.

How did you hear about Nimvelo? How has it changed the way you communicate?

We found Nimvelo through a Google search and liked the ease of setting up a phone number for our business. The forwarding functionality fits in nicely with how we manage our time and days.
