Business VoIP

Why does VoIP work so well?

Why VoIP works well

When we demonstrate the benefits of an internet phone service, some entrepreneurs simply can’t believe they haven’t discovered the technology sooner. For many sole traders and small businesses, missing calls can spell disaster, which is one of the key reasons why VoIP has taken off over the last decade.

If you run a business, the time is right to use business VoIP. But what makes it so great?

Fast connections

The rise of internet telephony has coincided with the increase in internet speeds. That’s no coincidence. Some cable services now give us 152Mbps connection speeds, while 4G is many times faster than its predecessor, 3G.

VoIP does work over 3G connections and slow broadband speeds, but a faster connection means more reliable service and better call quality. It’s this increase in speed that helps us to achieve crystal-clear, HD sound when we call VoIP-to-VoIP.

Versatility

Many VoIP users make calls using their laptop or computer, using a simple softphone application. The softphone places the call over the internet, and the user just plugs in speakers and headphones to chat.

But VoIP can also be used from a smartphone, or even a tablet, as long as it has a good quality connection over 4G or WiFi. Softphone apps for mobile devices are usually free, and offer fantastic call quality too.

If you can’t get a good WiFi signal, and you’re on a 3G network, VoIP calls can be diverted to a mobile number or landline. That means you can still get calls on your number as usual; you just pay for the connecting call from your pre-paid balance. You can set up this redirection so that it automatically kicks in if your softphone is offline.

Low cost

Getting a new telephone line is expensive, as any small business owner will tell you. There’s often a set-up fee to get the line put in, or to reactivate an existing line. Then, you have to pay monthly charges to keep that line in use.

VoIP lets you cut ties with the traditional telephone network. If you have a cable internet connection, there’s no need to have a telephone line installed as well. And if you work from multiple locations, you don’t need to find a phone box, or worry about calling from a landline. Just make sure you have enough minutes on your mobile contract to connect over a cellular network.
